Tucked away beside Great Shelford Parish Church, Shelford Primary school is a fascinating mixture of buildings of different ages ranging from the original school house of 1843 to more recent extensions.
The school is approached via a driveway immediately to the left of Great Shelford Parish church. To enter during the school day, the school office can be contacted via an intercom on the security gate.
Interior
The interior of the school has been adapted over the years to meet changing educational needs and improvements continue to be made. All of the seven spacious classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and networked computers.
The newer part of the building also houses a music room that doubles as a cooking facility with a basic cooking area.
We also have a small library complete with comfortable chairs and rugs for those intensive reading sessions.
Our large hall has a stage and physical-education equipment, it also doubles as the school dining room served by the adjacent kitchen.
Primary classrooms
Our reception classroom has a separate indoor activity area as well as doors opening out onto a small, self-contained, outside activity area.
Our year 1 classroom also has an indoor activity area.
Reception and year 1 classrooms share cloakroom facilities that have recently been refurbished.
Junior classrooms
Classrooms in key-stage 2 are equipped with 'islands' of computer desks where laptop computers are hidden beneath desk lids. This allows the desks to be used as normal and then for a group of pupils to undertake an activity using the computers.
Junior classrooms are housed in a 2-story block, all rooms are spacious, light and airy. The classrooms share cloakroom facilities.
Grounds & Facilities
Our school is very fortunate to have an excellent sized playground and playing fields backing onto agricultural land.
Surrounded by mature trees and with a view of the Parish Church, the school grounds are a very nice place to be on a sunny afternoon.
Playground
The playground consists of a tarmac court area and an adventure play area with highly popular equipment for use during break time.
The playground also provides seating and ample shading from the sun on those hot June afternoons.
Playing Field & Gardens
Our playing field is large enough for a good-sized football or cricket pitch. The field tapers towards the end, this area has been put to good use in providing us with somewhere to develop our wildlife garden. We also have a small cultivated area where vegetables are grown.
Swimming Pool
The school has its own heated swimming pool. This is used throughout the summer term to provide swimming lessons for all children.
The pool is also used for recreational purposes for pupils of the school. Details of how to access this facility is given to parents in the summer term each year.
