Kapla Bricks Workshop
Reception had a fantastic time this week creating a 'town' for our Kapla Bricks 'Big Build'. They had to concentrate hard to follow the pattern given to create a strong house, but were real persevering parrots when it was tricky and kept going to create an amazingly creative and varied city. We were particularly impressed by the team effort they made to work together and the care they took when looking after each others' buildings.
At the end of the next day they were just as excited to come back and see what everyone else had built. We were blown away by what we saw. Wow!!
Lots of children enjoyed sharing their creations with their families at the end of the day and a few even had fun saying goodbye to the big build and joining in with the big demolition. It took a day and a half to construct, but amazingly only half an hour team work to knock it down and pack away! Well done Shelford!
Yuck or Yummy?!
This half term Reception have enjoyed engaging in a variety of activities based around the theme of 'food'. We have explored stories like 'Handa's Surprise', 'The Runaway Chapatti' and 'The Gingerbread Man' and had fun tasting different food from around the world as well as exploring which types of food are healthy or unhealthy choices. We've also had fun making our own food (both real and imaginary) with our 'Giant Jam Sandwiches' being a firm favourite for lots of the class!
During Science week we linked our healthy eating focus to 'healthy bodies' and focused hard on learning about our teeth and how to look after them.

Chinese New Year
Reception had lots of fun learning all about Chinese New Year. This year is 'The Year of the Dragon'. In dance we helped act out 'tidying and decorating the house' before pretending to be real 'dragons' dancing ourselves. Afterwards we had a go making our own 'red envelopes' (complete with money!) and lanterns as well as joining in with the tradition of the 'Chinese Wishing Tree' where people through their wish onto a special  tree in the hope that it will come true!
It's Freezing!
This half term we have had lots of fun learning about The Arctic and Antarctica and comparing life in these 'freezing places' to our own experiences at home. We loved sharing what we'd learnt about polar animals through art, sculpture and stories and enjoyed pretending to be explorers ourselves getting ready for expeditions to the Polar Regions.
We've also enjoyed welcoming visitors in to learn more about people who help us in the community and had great fun sharing what we enjoy getting up to when out and about during regular show and tell sessions in class.
Christmas at Shelford
Reception enjoyed a lovely time in December ending our 'Tell me a Story' topic with an exploration of 'The Christmas Story'. We enjoyed acting the story out and joining KS1 on stage for the first time as part of our Nativity Play and loved learning about Christmas traditions around the world before joining in some Shelford School traditions of our own on the last day of school.
Look what I can do!
This half term Reception have had loads of fun getting to know each other, the classroom and the rest of the school. We have been learning about what makes each and every one of us special and enjoyed sharing our skills with each other.
Reading for Pleasure
We were pleased to invite parents and carers into school to hear all about the teaching of phonics and reading in Reception Class. After listening to a presentation by teachers, parents and carers joined the children in the classroom to share some books chosen from our class library. What a lovely time sharing books! The presentation can be viewed here.
Settling in
We are very proud of the way our new Reception children have settled into school so quickly, well done! Everyone has been hard at work exploring all the different areas of our classroom, having fun playing indoors and out, with the paints, marble run, train track, home corner, cars, beebots, building blocks and much much more!!!
Take a look below at some of the fun they had getting to know each other during their first few days at school. At the end of the week, the children had the opportunity to meet their Year 6 buddies, share a book together and visit the dinner hall in preparation for staying for lunch next week!
