Settling in
We are very proud of the way our new Reception children have settled into school so quickly, well done! Everyone has been hard at work exploring all the different areas of our classroom, having fun playing indoors and out, with the paints, marble run, train track, home corner, cars, dressing up and much much more!!! At the end of the first week, the children had the opportunity to meet their Year 6 buddies, share a book and play some games together to get to know each other in preparation for them helping Reception children when staying for lunch!
Throughout this half term Reception have continued to gain confidence developing skills across all areas of the curriculum and enjoyed building up a range of routines both in and out of the classroom. Many children have enjoyed working on their early number skills whilst others have already demonstrated a deep interest in the first stages of reading and writing independently. Everyone has enjoyed making new friends and exploring the environment together.

Topic Work
As part of our 'Marvellous Me' topic we have enjoyed learning about lots of different traditions and celebrations across the world. We explored the festival of 'Harvest' through a trip to the church and craft making in class and talked about celebrations we discovered in stories we read - like 'Elmer's Day'! We have learnt that lots of people have 'special people' in their lives and talked about things we can do to show them how special they are to us! It has also been exciting for lots of Reception to start 'show and tell' sessions to share more with their classmates about what makes them 'special'.

Out and About
This half term Reception have also been excited to start their first Forest School sessions. We have enjoyed learning how to get ourselves ready in dungarees and wellies (to keep us warm and dry and ready for exploring!) and had fun exploring the meadow and the wildlife area. We've already been exploring elephants discovering minibeasts, collecting miniature treasures, making mud pies and creating Forest Crowns - and we can't wait to explore some more!
Reception have also enjoyed meeting more children across the school and were pleased to visit Year 1 where our friends there had created 'Fruit Faces' for us in their DT lesson. Thank you - they were delicious!
Everyone was delighted to also celebrate the end of term by inviting in parents for a 'Reading for Pleasure' session. After learning all about how we teach phonics at Shelford lots of mums and dads enjoyed sharing a story (or 2!) together in our classroom and garden.
